The 2026 Financial Advisor YouTube Marketing Report

How we did it
What we measured, and how.
- Find what makes a financial advisor video break out on YouTube: the topic, the length, the title, the hook and the thumbnail.
- Turn that into a short list of moves an advisor or CFP can use this month.
- Viral Bangers grows YouTube channels for financial advisors.
- This report shows what wins in the US retirement and business tax niche, using public data only.
What one new client is worth to you
- Say a new client brings$1.5M
- At 1% that's$15,000 a year
- At a 75% gross margin you keep about$11,250
- If they stay 17 years, that's about$191,000
- Or, in today's money, about$127,000
- So you could spend up to about $40,000 to win one client and still make3x
- A full in-house YouTube team costs about$150,000 a year
Post a video every week for a year and close just one client from it, and you break even or come out ahead. On top of that, you've built your brand.
Industry benchmarks based on RIA averages. Your numbers will be different.
We scored 19,161 advisor videos from the past 12 months
Every long-form video from 236 US and 90 Canadian advisor channels, Nov 3, 2025 to Nov 3, 2026.
Long-form means over 3 minutes, with live streams left out. 1,401 videos under 21 days old weren't scored yet. 3,307 of the 4,904 outliers are at 3x+.
How the outlier multiple works
We take a video's views and divide them by the median views of the 5 uploads before it and the 5 after it on the same channel. 1.0x is a normal video for that channel. 3x is a breakout. We skip videos under 21 days old. We use medians, never averages.
The benchmark every chart is measured against
All 19,161 scored long-form videos from the past 12 months, on 326 channels.
Median length is the median of each channel's median. Videos a week is the median channel's long-form count over the 12 months.
Then we tagged every video
Keyword rules for topics and title patterns. Auto captions for hooks. Hand tagging for thumbnails, using Bryan's Viral Bangers taxonomy.
The thumbnail tags and the hooks come from the Nov 2 set: the last 50 long-form videos on 56 channels (2,403 videos).

State of the niche
Who is making advisor videos, and who is watching?
Key findingThe niche is wide and shallow, and small channels can win on packaging.
80% of core channels have under 100k subscribers
129 of 161 core channels have under 100k subscribers. Only 5 have 500k+.
Channel profiles in this part come from the Nov 2 channel list: 161 core US channels, with views per sub and posting data on 56-60 of them. The 12-month scoring doesn't include subscriber counts.
Two in three channels are about retirement, and retirement gets about 10x the views per sub
- Retirement 108 (67%)
- Mixed/general 27 (17%)
- Business/tax 26 (16%)
Median of the last 10 long-form videos ÷ subs. With the 4 new retirement channels: 0.116 (n=44).
Business tax channels have big sub counts and small live audiences. Their subs look like an archive.
Bigger channels post more often and run longer
Nov 2 set, 60 channels. Under 10k is 3 channels, a hint only.
Posting about once a week gets the best views per subscriber
Correlation across 60 channels. Groups under 5 channels are hints only. Nov 2 set, 60 channels.
Small channels can match big ones on reach per video
Cody Gunn gets a 70,832 median on 33.9k subs.

The Money Guy Show (708k, 143,877 median, mixed focus) and Wealth Steward (~2M median, an anomaly) are left out of the bars. Azul's identity match is unconfirmed.
Some edges can't be copied fast. Most can.
Hard to copy
- Azul: 7.14 videos/week, vs 1.2 median on the Nov 2 set
- Mark J Kohler: 617k subs, 5,501 median views
- LYFE Accounting: 596k subs, 1,679 median views
Easy to copy
- Cody Gunn, CFA: 33.9k subs, 70,832 median views
- Brandon Clark, CFP®: 26.4k subs, 28,352 median views
Volume and a big archive are hard to match. Packaging is free to copy, and small channels use it to beat big ones.
What to doPick retirement over business tax, post once a week, and win on packaging.
In short
- 80% of core channels are under 100k subs. There's room.
- Retirement gets about 10x the views per sub of business tax.
- Once a week is the norm (1.2 on the Nov 2 set, 0.9 across all 326 channels). The best views per sub sit at 0.5-1.5 a week.
- Small channels win with packaging (Cody Gunn: 70,832 median on 33.9k subs).
Ads stop when you stop paying. Videos stay up.
A Meta ad works until you turn it off. A YouTube video stays on your channel and in search for as long as you leave it up.
Post every week and in a year you have 50 videos working for you, all building your name.
Video length
How long should an advisor video be?
Key finding16-22 minute videos get the most views and break out most often. Two in three videos are shorter.
16-22 minute videos get about 2.1x the niche's median views. Only 1 in 6 is that long.
7,002 median views vs 3,352 for the niche. 65.5% of videos are under 16 minutes. The median channel runs 12.8 minutes.
Median views Share of videos
19,161 long-form videos. Bars: median views. Line: share of all videos.
The 16-22 band beats the niche on every measure
At 2x+ At 3x+
Under 8 minutes and over 35 minutes break out least: 22.0% and 21.0% at 2x+, vs 30.7% for 16-22.
Your videos do the first meeting for you
Before someone hands you $1.5M, they want to know who you are. That used to take a lunch or a handshake.
Now they watch you explain the RRIF or the OAS clawback for 20 minutes. They see your face, hear how you think, and start to trust you.
So by the time they book a call, they already know you. The call just confirms what they decided while watching.
That's why your videos should be 16 to 22 minutes. The longer they spend with you, the more they trust you.
Every focus group runs short of the winning band
16 min
Nov 2 set: channel medians for 60 channels, grouped by focus.
All three focus groups sit below or at the bottom of the band that wins. Mixed channels pass 16 minutes; they include long podcast-style shows.
Podcasts and live Q&A lag the niche. Reaction and news videos lead at 1.16x.
0.98x niche
Formats come from title keywords, so one video can sit in more than one. Reaction/news is the smallest group at n=273.
The biggest breakouts sit in the band
- "I'm A Retirement Advisor: Here's What I Tell Every Client At 62"Mark Whitaker, Retire Early with Mark, CFP®1,000,000 views20.7 min294.12xWatch
Two of the three titles put the length in the title ("in 18 Minutes", "in 20 Minutes").
What to doMake 16-22 minute solo videos. Skip under-8-minute long-form and 35+ minute podcasts.
In short
- Make 16-22 minute videos. That band is 1.14x and 30.7% at 2x+, vs 0.98x and 25.6% for the niche.
- 65.5% of the niche posts under 16 minutes, so the band is open.
- Skip under-8-minute long-form (0.88x) and podcasts (0.84x).
- [Judgment, hint from 2 examples] Try putting the length in the title ("in 18 Minutes").
Topics that win
What should an advisor make videos about?
Key findingRoth leads at 1.42x. Social Security, RMDs, dollar amounts and retirement age all beat the niche on views and multiple.
Some topics pull views, some break out, and a few do both

0.98x niche median
The topics that beat the niche
"Can I retire with $X"
The biggest of the winning topics at n=2,486. Viewers check themselves against the number.
Social Security
Claiming age, earnings limits and law changes drive it.
Roth conversions
n=449. The smallest of the winning topics, and the best hit rate.
IRS and law-change news
News on a named bill or IRS change is the most reliable spike. Financial Fast Lane and Devin Carroll covered the same Senior Citizens Freedom to Work Act story, and both broke out.
Smaller but loyal vs broad but flat
Loyal audience: fewer views, frequent breakouts
- RMDs and IRA/401k withdrawals: 1.14x, 30.0% at 2x+, 2,847 median views
Broad but flat: decent views, rarely beat normal
- Spending / lifestyle in retirement: 4,269 median views, 0.92x
- Mistakes / regrets / warnings: 3,250 median views, 0.95x, n=3,326
Mistake titles are everywhere, so they no longer stand out.

Reframe these topics
- Taxes in retirement: 0.87x, n=1,732. Reframe it as a Roth or Social Security decision with a $ figure.
- Business-owner tax: 0.86x, n=631. Lowest median views of any topic (1,222).
- Estate and trusts: 0.95x, n=1,492. Lead with a story or a famous case (the Graceland title-fraud hook worked).
- Medicare / HSA: 0.81x, n=462, the lowest multiple.
- Market crash / fear: 0.88x, n=648, and only 9.7% hit 3x+. Fear sells less than you'd expect here.

Every topic has proven breakouts. Some have far more.
Label: outliers · channels with one · median multiple of those outliers.
Outlier counts track how often a topic is made. Read this with the chart above, which shows the hit rate.
Proven title frames get copied across channels
Reusing a frame that already broke out is normal practice here.

In short
- Lead with Roth (1.42x), Social Security (1.15x), RMDs (1.14x) and "Can I retire with $X" (1.14x).
- Be fast on named bills and IRS changes. Reaction and news videos are 1.16x.
- Turn tax, estate and investing ideas into a retirement decision with a $ figure.
- Copy proven title frames. "Give Me N Minutes" has 9 outliers on 7 channels. (Nov 2 set)
Titles and hooks
What should an advisor's title say?
Key findingConcrete beats clever. A dollar figure is the strongest thing you can put in a title.
Advisor titles with a number do about 15% better
49% of advisor titles have one. That's the opposite of YouTube overall, where 1of10 found numbers cost 11% of views.
Every title pattern, with vs without
Dot = with the pattern. Ring = without. Right column: % at 2x+ with / without. Groups overlap.
Concrete beats clever. Dollar figures (1.15x), years (1.12x) and one CAPS word (1.06x) help. Questions, colons and negative words don't.
Dollar titles get hundreds of thousands of views
$ figure titles: 1.15x vs 0.97x without (n=2,250). These examples are from the Nov 2 set.

Negative titles are 14% of the niche, and they do 7% worse
We flagged titles with mistake, never, don't, wrong or trap. That's a keyword rule. 1of10 used the TextBlob library instead.
1of10 found negative titles get 22% more views across YouTube. In this niche, bad news is old news. Everyone uses mistake titles, so they blend in. The ones that win add a $ figure, an age or a named thing.

Putting CFP or CPA in the title doesn't help
The credential works as a quick line in the hook. In the title or the channel name, it shows no lift.
50 of 157 core channels put a credential in the name.
Winning titles run about 10 words and 57 characters
552 outliers at 3x+, our method. Nov 2 set.
These are winners only. They show what winners look like. They can't show which length performs best.
Questions cost a little. Curiosity words barely move it.

Which thumbnails win
Which thumbnail formats show up more in winners than in the same channels' normal videos?
Key findingProblem State thumbnails show up 2.6x more often in winners than in normal videos. Title Head is the default, but it's less common among winners.
This part uses the Nov 2 scored set (2,403 videos on 56 channels). The 12-month data has no thumbnail tags yet.
We compared 291 winners with 149 normal videos from the same 55 channels
Winners are videos at 3x+ the channel's median. Normal videos are under 3x, sampled from the same channels in proportion. Lift is how much more often a format shows up in winners than in normal videos.

Small samples. Dramatic Face is 9 vs 2, A affects B is 6 vs 2. Read those as directions only. The winners were tagged earlier with the same taxonomy, and we tagged the normal videos by eye for this comparison.
Off-center layouts win. Symmetrical ones show up 47% less.
Asymmetrical is 79.7% of winners vs 69.1% of normal videos. Symmetrical, usually two people side by side, is 12.0% vs 22.8%.
Winners Normal
Winners Normal
Content type is the least reliable tag here. Moment and Novelty are easy to mix up, so treat the Novelty and Result lift as an estimate.
Faces and word count don't separate winners
A face shows up in 96% of winners and 94% of normal videos. Both have a median of 4 words of text. Red and yellow show up more in winners. Blue and grey show up less.

Editing and trust
How do winning advisors earn the click and the trust?
Key findingSolo, scripted talking-head videos win. Trust comes from saying your proof early.
Four editing styles show up in the niche
These styles are guessed from lengths, caption markers and titles. No frame-by-frame review. A measured editing-style tag per video (cuts per minute, b-roll share, on-screen text, number of speakers) with the median multiple per style.
Trust moves that show up in winning videos
- Credential said out loud, early. Cody Gunn (CFA), Jasmine DiLucci (tax attorney, CPA, EA) and Boris Musheyev (CPA) say theirs in the first 30 seconds.
- Track record numbers. James Conole: 1,000+ clients, $2.5B. Jeremy Finger: 30 years.
- Outside source on screen. Azul reads a MoneyWise article. News videos name the bill and its sponsors.
- Client examples. The case-study format sits at 1.04x with 10,417 median views (n=51).
- Peer voice. "As Midwestern millionaires" (Joe Schmitz).
Most advisor channels skip the disclaimer
Disclaimer text is hygiene. It won't grow the channel, but a compliance problem can end it.
Nov 2 channel list. On the Nov 2 set (50 of 157), a credential in the name showed no lift in views per sub (0.087 vs 0.082).
What to doSay your credential and one proof number in the first 25 seconds. Add disclaimer text to your About section.
In short
- Solo, scripted, talking head with pop-ins. Save podcasts for later.
- Say your credential and one proof number by second 25.
- Show the source on screen for news.
- Add RIA/disclaimer text to the About section and descriptions.
Shorts vs long-form
Do Shorts help an advisor channel?
Key findingLong-form is the engine. Channels posting 100+ Shorts a year get fewer long-form views per sub, mostly on tax channels.
71% of core advisor channels post Shorts
Most channels use Shorts as clips of their long videos.
- Post Shorts 104
- Don't 43
Channels that post 100+ Shorts a year get fewer long-form views per sub
Most of the gap comes from business tax channels, which post more Shorts (median 40 a year vs 13 for retirement) and have lower views per sub anyway. Among retirement channels the gap is small.
Correlation across channels. This doesn't show whether Shorts help or hurt. n=5 is a hint. Not measured yet: Shorts views, and long-form views before vs after a channel starts or stops Shorts, to test the effect directly.
What to doKeep the weekly long video. Cut 3-5 Shorts from each one.
In short
- Long-form is the engine. Shorts are clips.
- Cut 3-5 Shorts from each long video [Judgment, from the DOC playbook].
- Don't let Shorts replace the weekly long video.

Advisor viewers break YouTube's rules
1of10's 2025 report measured all of YouTube. Advisor videos go the other way on two of four.
1of10 compares median views. We compare outlier multiples, so the scale differs. The direction is what matters.
What to doDon't copy generic YouTube advice. Use numbers and dollar figures, and skip the doom titles.
Playbook
What to do in the first 90 days.
Key findingShip 16-22 minute videos weekly, on proven topics, with concrete titles.
Days 1-30

- Build the hook template.
- Publish 4 videos, 1 a week, 16-22 minutes, from proven topics.
- Cut 3-5 Shorts from each.
Days 31-60
- Check your own multiples. Make a second video on any topic that beat your median.
- Make your first news video when a bill or IRS change hits.
- Try one anonymized client case study.
Days 61-90
- Turn your best frame into a series ("Can I retire with $X at age Y?").
- Drop anything under 0.8x after 3 tries.
- Skip podcasts and live Q&A until you have an audience.
The packaging template

- Hook
- Stake in sentence 1, promise in sentence 2, credential or client proof by second 25.

Data
- All public YouTube data. Every long-form video from Nov 3, 2025 to Nov 3, 2026 on 326 channels (236 US, 90 Canada), scored Nov 3, 2026. No YouTube Studio data.
Method
- Outlier multiple: views ÷ the median of the 5 uploads before and the 5 after on the same channel. Videos under 21 days old are skipped. Medians only.
- Scored set: 19,161 long-form videos (over 3 minutes, live streams left out). 3,307 at 3x+ (17.3%), 4,904 at 2x+ (25.6%).
- Topics, formats and title patterns come from title keywords. One video can sit in several.
- Some parts use the earlier Nov 2 set (the last 50 long-form videos on 56 channels, 2,403 videos): channel profiles by focus and subscriber tier, title word count, hooks, and thumbnails. Each of those charts says so.
- Thumbnails: 291 winners vs 149 normal videos from the same 55 channels, tagged by eye. Face, text and color are classifier estimates.
- Tiny-baseline channels show extreme multiples (up to ~2,000x). Read those as "broke out".
Known gaps
- 110 videos failed to load details. 14 channels on the list had no long-form video in the 12 months.
- Shorts and the case study use their own samples, stated on each chart.
